The body of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga has arrived in Kisumu aboard a military helicopter, marking a deeply emotional moment for the nation. The aircraft, coded ENIGMA01, touched down at Kisumu International Airport at 7:20 a.m. on Saturday under heightened security.
Upon arrival, Raila received his final military water salute, a symbolic and historic gesture marking his last journey to the lakeside city that has long been his political stronghold. Military personnel coordinated the transfer of the casket to Mamboleo Stadium, which has been designated as the official venue for public viewing.
An interfaith prayer service led by religious leaders from various denominations will precede the viewing. Members of the public will have the opportunity to pay their respects throughout the day. Authorities have deployed security agencies, including the Kenya Defence Forces and the National Police Service, to maintain peace and order during the proceedings.
Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o urged residents to remain calm and honour Raila’s legacy through peace. “People in this region love peace. Let that be proven today, so that we don’t let down our leader, his family, the Kenyan nation, and the international community,” Nyong’o said.
The viewing in Kisumu is part of a series of national events celebrating Raila’s remarkable contribution to Kenya’s democracy and unity. The former opposition leader passed away in India on October 13, 2025, while receiving treatment.
Raila’s body will later be moved to his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County, for a state burial service on Sunday. President William Ruto and other national leaders are expected to attend.
The burial will fulfill Raila’s wish to be laid to rest within 72 hours of his passing — a final chapter in the life of one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.
