The body of former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga will be airlifted from Kisumu to his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County, this evening for a night vigil ahead of his burial on Sunday.
Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo confirmed that earlier plans to transport the body by road had been changed for logistical and security reasons. The body will now be flown directly from Kisumu’s Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium to Bondo.
Dr. Omollo said the decision was reached after consultations between the National Funeral Steering Committee and the Odinga family to ensure a dignified and well-coordinated send-off.
“The body of the former Prime Minister will be flown directly to Bondo. We want to make sure the transition from Kisumu to his home is done smoothly and respectfully,” Omollo stated.
Public viewing of Raila’s body at Mamboleo Stadium is set to conclude at 3 p.m., though authorities may extend viewing hours to accommodate the large number of mourners.
Omollo urged Kenyans to maintain peace and calm, emphasizing that Raila’s legacy was built on unity and democratic reform.
“Raila cherished peace and unity. As Kenyans, we must honour his legacy by maintaining peace throughout this mourning period,” he added.
The PS assured mourners that they are “safe in the hands of President William Ruto,” noting that Raila supported the idea of a broad-based government that worked for all Kenyans.
Once in Bondo, Raila’s body will be taken to his Opoda home for a night vigil before the private burial ceremony at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi on Sunday. Dignitaries and family members will attend the burial, while the public can follow proceedings from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University.
Security has been heightened across Kisumu and Siaya Counties to ensure a smooth and peaceful farewell for the statesman many regarded as a pillar of Kenya’s democracy.
