Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at his family home in Kango Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, in a ceremony steeped in Anglican traditions. This follows a series of solemn events organized by the National Funeral Committee, chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
During a State Address on Wednesday, October 15, Kindiki confirmed the funeral programme, explaining that while Raila’s family had requested a 72-hour burial window as per his wishes, logistical adjustments were necessary since the former Prime Minister died abroad.
According to the official schedule, Raila’s body will arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 8:30 a.m., where it will be received by President William Ruto and members of the Odinga family. From JKIA, the body will be transferred to Lee Funeral Home before being taken to Parliament Buildings, where it will lie in state for public viewing between 12 noon and 5 p.m.
On Friday, a State Funeral service will be held at Nyayo Stadium starting at 8 a.m., attended by local and international dignitaries. Afterwards, the body will return to his Karen residence for an overnight stay.
The following day, Saturday, the cortege will depart for Kisumu, where mourners will view the body at Moi Stadium from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. before proceeding to Bondo for another night vigil.
Raila Odinga will finally be laid to rest on Sunday, beside his late son Fidel Odinga and his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President.
The week-long programme is expected to draw thousands of mourners across the nation and beyond, marking the final farewell to one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.
