Preparations for the funeral service of Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga, are complete at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo. The somber event marks the final farewell to the veteran politician, fondly referred to as Jakom, whose leadership and legacy have deeply influenced Kenya’s political landscape for decades.
Family members, church leaders, and top military personnel are already assembled at Opoda Farm, Raila’s rural home, awaiting the start of the procession to the university. The Kenya Defence Forces have taken charge of the logistics, with a military vehicle carrier prepared to ferry Raila’s body to the service venue. Police outriders and senior military officers are on standby to lead the solemn convoy.
According to the family’s program, the procession will commence shortly after a brief service at the homestead. Raila Odinga Jr. was seen consulting with the security team at Opoda Farm, ensuring all arrangements proceed smoothly before departure.
The late leader’s casket, draped in the Kenyan flag, symbolizes his lifelong service to the nation. His body was airlifted to Bondo from Kisumu after a public viewing at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, where thousands gathered to pay their final respects. Mourners at Opoda Farm received the helicopter carrying his body with tears, songs, and the sound of vuvuzelas — a heartfelt tribute to the man who dedicated his life to public service and democracy.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo confirmed that earlier plans to transport the body by road were revised for logistical and security reasons. Following the funeral service at JOOUST, Raila will be laid to rest at the family home in Kang’o ka’Jaramogi, Bondo, where preparations for Sunday’s burial are already underway.
