The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) marked its 20th anniversary with a powerful message from party leader Raila Odinga, who urged members to exercise restraint when speaking about the party’s political plans ahead of the 2027 general election.
Odinga, while addressing delegates at the anniversary celebrations, hinted that ODM may front its own presidential candidate in 2027. However, he cautioned party leaders against making premature declarations that could undermine the party’s strategy.
“Don’t commit the party to some things that have not been discussed. Who told you ODM does not have a candidate in 2027?” Odinga posed.
The former Prime Minister emphasized that ODM already has a clear internal plan, insisting that members should focus on implementing agreed strategies rather than fueling speculation. He reiterated that decisions about the presidential ticket will be made officially at the appropriate time.
His remarks come amid growing internal debate within ODM, with some members expressing dissatisfaction over speculation that the party could support President William Ruto in 2027. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who also serves as ODM Secretary-General, has publicly warned that he would exit the party if such an endorsement materialized.
“Raila himself has said that this is a democratic party and any member is free to speak their mind, yet some thugs are saying I cannot hold views independent of the party just because I am the secretary-general, that I represent the party at all times,” Sifuna remarked last month.
While Odinga has remained non-committal about his own intentions for the 2027 presidential race, his remarks signal that ODM will not be sidelined in Kenya’s political landscape. The party, which has been a dominant force since its formation in 2005, appears keen on maintaining its relevance as the country gears toward another fiercely contested election.
