The late Raila Odinga will be laid on an orange-draped bed during public viewing, a powerful tribute that mirrors the movement he led and the ideals he championed. Organizers say the color choice reflects the spirit of resilience, courage, and unity that defined Raila’s political and personal journey.
Orange, the signature color of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has long symbolized the energy and hope behind Raila’s leadership. The organizers explained that the color not only honors his party but also the broader values of democracy and inclusivity that he tirelessly fought for.
“The choice of colors at state funerals serves as both a tribute and a reflection of the leaders’ personal and political philosophies. For Raila, orange could not have been more fitting,” said an official involved in the arrangements.
This tribute continues a tradition established in previous state funerals. The late President Daniel arap Moi was laid on a blue-draped bed to represent his blue presidential standard, while former President Mwai Kibaki’s white drape symbolized peace and integrity.
The plane carrying Raila’s body touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 9:30 a.m., where it was received by President William Ruto, family members, and other dignitaries. After a brief ceremony, the motorcade proceeded under tight security to Kasarani Stadium, where thousands of Kenyans are expected to pay their final respects.
Initially, the body was to lie in state at Parliament Buildings, but officials made a last-minute decision to move the public viewing to Kasarani due to overwhelming crowds. Military officers who had been stationed at Parliament were later redirected to the new venue.
Preparations at Kasarani are in full swing, with security teams, morticians, and the military coordinating the solemn event. As Kenya gathers to honor Raila Odinga, the orange drape will stand as a vibrant symbol of the legacy he leaves behind—a legacy of unity, resilience, and unwavering belief in a better Kenya.
