Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has dismissed claims that the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s political journey ended without a clear succession plan, asserting that the ODM leader left behind a “political will” to guide the party’s future.
In a post shared on X on Saturday, Kaluma said Raila’s legacy continues through the Broad-Based Government arrangement, which he described as the ODM leader’s roadmap for continuity.
“Some politicians wrongly believe Baba rested before giving ODM and his supporters political direction for the future. Please don’t lie to yourself. Baba didn’t just leave us in the Broad-Based Government, but he also left a political will to be followed and implemented,” Kaluma stated.
According to the MP, Raila’s “political will” serves as a blueprint that embodies his vision of inclusivity, unity, and equitable governance. He said ODM will use this framework to strengthen its presence within the Broad-Based Government and advance Raila’s ideals.
Kaluma emphasized that the party remains firmly anchored in the structure that Raila helped establish before his death, assuring supporters that ODM’s unity remains intact.
“For a start, the Broad-Based Government will win all the by-election seats come November,” he said, expressing confidence in ODM’s continued influence in upcoming political contests.
His remarks come amid growing debate within ODM and the opposition coalition about leadership succession and the party’s ideological direction. Some leaders have advocated for generational renewal, while others insist on safeguarding Raila’s long-held principles.
Kaluma cautioned against any attempts to dilute Raila’s vision, saying the best way to honor the veteran politician is by implementing his policies and upholding party solidarity.
Raila Odinga, who led ODM for over two decades, was instrumental in shaping Kenya’s political landscape through his advocacy for constitutional reforms, devolution, and social justice. His passing has sparked widespread reflection on ODM’s next chapter and the future of opposition politics in Kenya.
