Raila Odinga’s sister, Akinyi Wenwa, has publicly criticized the conduct of security officers during the public receptions of her late brother’s body, saying the violence against mourners would have deeply saddened him.
Speaking during Raila’s burial ceremony on Sunday, October 19, 2025, Akinyi was introduced to the public for the first time, addressing the massive crowd with both sorrow and conviction. She praised Kenyans for the overwhelming love they had shown but condemned the reported injuries inflicted on mourners by security personnel.
“He would be so happy to see this love, but because he was so compassionate, I am sure the only thing making him unhappy now is that some of the people who came to receive his body got hurt by our security organs,” she said.
Akinyi urged law enforcement to exercise restraint, saying that trained officers should be able to manage crowds without resorting to violence. She called for improved handling of future public events as a lasting tribute to Raila’s legacy of compassion and humanity.
“You are well-trained; you should be able to contain a rowdy crowd without killing, shooting, or hurting anyone. As a tribute to Raila, let that be the last time such a thing happens,” she added.
In her emotional speech, Akinyi also shared fond memories of her brother’s disciplined lifestyle—his early morning jogs, strict punctuality, and attention to detail while working at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
She revealed that while they often disagreed, Raila respected her opinion and often looked to her for honest feedback on his political strategies.
“We sometimes had hot arguments, but he valued my input. He knew I would not spare him,” she said with a smile.
Akinyi’s heartfelt remarks offered a rare glimpse into Raila’s private life and reinforced calls for peace, dignity, and respect in honouring his memory.
