ODM leader Raila Odinga has called a crucial Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting this morning, bringing together the party’s members from both the National Assembly and Senate. The meeting, scheduled to start at 8:30 am at Argyle Grand Hotel along Mombasa Road, comes ahead of Parliament’s resumption of sittings after a long recess.
According to a memo sent to legislators by National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed on 18th September, the agenda will focus on preparations for the party’s upcoming 20th anniversary celebrations, parliamentary business, and other matters of importance to the party. “Our party the Orange Democratic Movement will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary from 9th to 12th October 2025. In preparation, you are invited to attend an ODM parliamentary (PG) meeting,” the memo reads.
Raila’s call for the meeting comes amid ongoing efforts to maintain unity within ODM, which has recently witnessed internal divisions over support for the broad-based government. A group of younger legislators, led by party secretary general and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, has been opposing the broad-based arrangement and is rallying under the Kenya Moja group. MPs Anthony Kibagendi, Babu Owino, Caleb Amisi, Obadia Barongo, and Clive Gisairo are among those aligned with this faction.
On the other hand, leaders such as Junet Mohamed, Peter Kaluma, George Aladwa, and Sam Atandi have been vocal in their support for the broad-based arrangement and President William Ruto’s two-term agenda. Analysts say the divisions within ODM could influence the party’s stance on legislative and policy matters once Parliament resumes.
Ahead of the anniversary celebrations, ODM has been holding pre-events in several counties. Last Saturday, the party staged activities in Wajir, while this Friday, Raila will lead supporters to Kisii for a cultural and political rally at Gusii Stadium, drawing delegates from the former Nyanza and Western regions.
With Parliament resuming and the 20th anniversary approaching, Raila’s meeting is expected to reinforce party cohesion and set the tone for ODM’s future political direction.
