ODM leader Raila Odinga has urged party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna to adopt a more measured tone when addressing issues concerning the Kenya Kwanza administration. Speaking during the funeral of the late Kasipul MP Charles Were in Oyugis, Homa Bay County, Raila emphasized the need for unity within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and called for support for the four Cabinet Secretaries from the party serving in President William Ruto’s government.
“Sifuna, sometimes do not be too harsh,” Raila said, acknowledging Sifuna’s role as the official spokesperson of the party but cautioning against overly combative rhetoric. He noted that while the party maintains its identity and principles, it has entered into a formal agreement with the Kenya Kwanza government a 10-point agenda he said was documented and meant to benefit the country.
Among the ODM members serving in the Cabinet are John Mbadi (Treasury), Hassan Joho (Mining), Opiyo Wandayi (Energy), and Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives). Raila urged ODM supporters to back these leaders, stressing that their performance reflects on the party’s ability to govern effectively.
Mbadi, the longest-serving ODM chairman, echoed Raila’s sentiments, stressing that he remains loyal to the party and is committed to delivering results. “I found the economy in bad shape and I am working hard to turn things around,” said Mbadi. “If I fail, it will be difficult for ODM to convince Kenyans we can run a government in 2027.”
The remarks come amid increasing tension within ODM ranks, as Sifuna has been openly critical of ODM’s collaboration with the government, questioning the party’s direction and calling out what he views as political compromise.
Raila’s call appears aimed at striking a balance between constructive engagement with the government and maintaining party cohesion, particularly as ODM positions itself for the 2027 general elections.
He urged party members to stay united despite differing opinions, stating, “A party must have a firm stand on particular matters, but we must also support our own when they are trying to deliver.”
