A requiem mass for the late Kasipul Member of Parliament Ong’ondo Were will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at the Consolata Shrine in Nairobi. The service will bring together top government officials, Members of Parliament, and parliamentary staff as they gather to pay their last respects to the slain legislator.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who led lawmakers in viewing the body at Lee Funeral Home on May 6, confirmed the date and venue of the service. He noted that Parliament will cover all related costs, including morgue fees, airlifting of the body, and travel expenses for the family, as a gesture of honour to their fallen colleague.
“This is our way of showing the family that when they gave Parliament a husband and father, he indeed made a difference,” Wetang’ula stated. He further condemned the killing, calling it a “cowardly act” and urged swift justice.
Following the Nairobi service, Ong’ondo’s body will be flown to Kasipul Constituency on May 8 for public viewing. He will be laid to rest on Friday, May 9, in Kachien Village, his rural home in Homa Bay County.
Ong’ondo was gunned down on Wednesday, April 30, by an unidentified assailant along Ngong Road in Nairobi. According to government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor, the MP was shot five times in the chest at close range, confirming fears that the attack was targeted and premeditated. The assailant, reportedly riding a motorcycle, fled the scene and remains at large.
Preparations for the final rites are ongoing, coordinated by Parliament, the Homa Bay County Government, and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga appealed for calm and unity among residents ahead of the burial. “Let peace prevail as we mourn our son. We must honour his memory with dignity,” she said, urging residents from across the county to show respect during the funeral proceedings.
The nation continues to reel from the shock of Ong’ondo’s tragic death, with many calling for justice and greater protection for public servants.
