Bishops from the Rift Valley region have called for meaningful dialogue and tolerance to address the concerns raised by Generation Z during recent anti-government protests. Speaking after a week-long prayer meeting at the RCEA Conference and Training Center in Eldoret, the clergy emphasized the need for peace, unity, and constitutional order amid rising political tensions in the country.
Led by Bishop Luka Maiyo of the AIC Church, the religious leaders included Bishop Elly Rop of the Full Gospel Church, Christopher Misoi of the Seventh Adventist Church, and David Leting, moderator of the Reformed Church. The bishops warned against the growing trend of political intolerance, stating it undermines national development and distorts the gains made in critical sectors.
“We believe two wrongs cannot be a solution. We must use proper mechanisms to listen to each other and foster peace and national unity,” said Bishop Rop.
The clergy acknowledged that while the government faces numerous challenges, it has made notable progress in development programs. They cited improvements in healthcare through the Social Health Authority (SHA), better agricultural productivity with improved cane and coffee prices, and successes in the affordable housing initiative.
Bishop Maiyo urged all citizens, especially the youth, to engage in respectful and constructive conversations, saying, “We must honour the 2010 Constitution and uphold the values enshrined in it. Unity is key to securing prosperity for current and future generations.”
The bishops further urged leaders and citizens to resist divisive politics and misinformation, which they said could derail national progress. They encouraged the media to practice balanced and objective reporting to avoid fueling polarization.
The church leaders concluded by urging young people to direct their passion and energy in ways that honor both God and society. “Dialogue and tolerance must prevail. We depend on one another to thrive,” said Bishop Rop, calling on all Kenyans to embrace peace for the good of the nation.
Their collective message underscored the importance of open dialogue, mutual respect, and national cohesion as the country navigates a tense political climate.
