Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly admitted to making critical mistakes during his tenure as Kenya’s second-in-command, particularly in trusting the wrong people within his inner circle. Speaking candidly about his experience, Gachagua revealed that his downfall stemmed from surrounding himself with individuals who merely flattered him, rather than those with proven loyalty and integrity.
“I brought people who were talking nicely to me into my inner circle, and they are the ones who were brought to betray me,” Gachagua said. He emphasized the importance of thoroughly vetting those who are entrusted with close access, noting that positions such as Personal Assistants should be given to individuals whose character and values are well known.
Gachagua was impeached in October 2024, after serving as Deputy President for approximately two and a half years. His tenure ended amid political turbulence and accusations of disloyalty within his own ranks an outcome he now attributes to misplaced trust and political naivety.
“In the lessons of betrayal, we have learnt whom to trust,” he remarked. “I made so many mistakes in high office… but I am now a very wise person. I thank God some of these things happened.”
Since his impeachment, Gachagua has repositioned himself politically, joining the opposition and becoming one of the most vocal critics of President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration. He has been actively engaging with fellow opposition leaders in an effort to forge a unified front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Gachagua’s recent statements reflect a shift in his political philosophy one rooted in caution, experience, and a resolve to correct past errors. He now advocates for unity within the opposition as the key to addressing the country’s challenges, stressing that the mistakes of the past must not be repeated.
“Our unity is what will save this country,” he said, calling for a focused and disciplined opposition to counter what he describes as a failing administration.
As the political landscape evolves, Gachagua’s introspection and renewed strategy signal a potentially pivotal role in shaping the opposition’s direction ahead of the next electoral cycle.
