Public Service and Human Capital Development Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has condemned Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga over his controversial remarks about the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, terming them “un-African and deeply disrespectful.”
Speaking during an inspection of the Kamutu and Kianamuri Electrification Projects in Evurore, Mbeere North Subcounty, Embu County, Ruku said Kahiga’s comments were an affront to African traditions that value respect for the deceased.
“The governor’s utterances do not reflect the values and aspirations of African culture. You cannot speak ill of a person who has died. It is against our moral and cultural principles. He should resign,” Ruku said.
He further urged the people of Nyeri to distance themselves from their governor’s remarks and demand accountability from their leaders. Ruku emphasized that leaders should model unity and integrity, particularly at a time when the nation is mourning a prominent figure who dedicated his life to democracy and justice.
The Cabinet Secretary underscored the importance of unity, noting that Kenya’s strength lies in shared respect and not in divisive rhetoric.
Ruku’s sentiments were echoed by former Mbeere North MP and current Senior Advisor to the President, Muriuki Njagagua, who also criticized Governor Kahiga. Njagagua described the remarks as shameful and unbecoming of a sitting governor.
“The President recognized the late Prime Minister for his achievements and sacrifices in the struggle for democracy. Disrespecting him even in death is uncouth and shameful,” Njagagua stated.
He added that President William Ruto’s gesture to honour Raila Odinga was a symbol of reconciliation and maturity in leadership—an act that should be celebrated, not mocked.
Both leaders appealed to Kenyans to uphold peace, respect, and unity, stressing that national development can only thrive in an environment of mutual understanding and dignity.
