Ruth Odinga, the younger sister of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, delivered an emotional and heartfelt tribute during his farewell ceremony, painting a vivid picture of a man who dedicated his life to Kenya’s freedom and democracy.
With tears in her eyes and a trembling voice, Ruth spoke of the immense personal sacrifices Raila made throughout his life in service to his country.
“My heart is heavy, my heart is in pain,” she said. “You have suffered for this country, and many could not see it. You have done your part. Go rest now, my brother.”
Ruth described Raila as a strong and unyielding leader, whose resolve was tested time and again during Kenya’s most turbulent political periods. She recalled the countless times her brother endured imprisonment, exile, and political betrayal—all for the sake of the nation he so deeply loved.
“Our family has suffered because he sacrificed himself for Kenya. He died still crying for the country,” Ruth added, her voice breaking with emotion.
She expressed the pain of seeing a man known for his strength and determination now lying lifeless, saying it was difficult to comprehend that his powerful voice had finally gone silent.
“Raila has suffered for the Kenyan people. It’s not easy to see someone as strong as him lying there,” she said.
In her closing remarks, Ruth called on members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to uphold Raila’s vision of unity, peace, and justice.
“ODM must remain one. That’s what he stood for unity, peace, and justice for all,” she urged.
Her tribute captured the deep emotional toll that public service took on Raila and his family, while reminding Kenyans of the enduring legacy he leaves behind a legacy of resilience, democracy, and unwavering love for his country.
