A section of leaders allied to President William Ruto has urged Mt. Kenya residents to reject calls by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and instead embrace the government’s development agenda. The call was made on Thursday at the Wamagana Stadium in Nyeri County during an economic empowerment forum, where leaders insisted the Kenya Kwanza administration remains committed to equitable development across the country.
Leading the charge was National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro, who emphasized the need for unity and national perspective, rather than being swayed by regional politics. “Leo nimekuja na hiyo message kabisa kwa watu wa Central. Tafadhali, let us embrace the government of the day. Kura yako ni siri yako. There is Kenya beyond our area,” said Osoro. He warned that isolating the region from the national agenda would be counterproductive.
The leaders used the platform to express confidence in Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, describing him as a unifying and forward-thinking leader. Kindiki has increasingly been seen as a key figure in the Kenya Kwanza administration amid growing speculation about future political realignments in the region.
Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri echoed Osoro’s sentiments, stating that the Kenya Kwanza government is executing its development plan as promised during the campaign. “Sisi hatuna haja ya siasa ya kuchonganisha. We are here to account for our promises. This government had a plan, and that plan is being implemented,” Kiunjuri stated.
The remarks come amid a deepening rift within Mt. Kenya politics, with Gachagua championing a more region-centric approach, citing fears of marginalization. However, Ruto allies are pushing back, urging residents to look beyond local politics and support the broader national vision.
The forum at Wamagana is seen as part of a wider effort by Ruto’s allies to consolidate support in Mt. Kenya, a region that was instrumental in delivering votes for the Kenya Kwanza coalition in 2022. As 2027 looms, the political dynamics in the region are expected to intensify.
