President William Ruto on Sunday attended a service at St Mary’s AIPCA Church in Kathelwa, Meru County, where he urged leaders to focus on delivering services rather than engaging in endless political debates.
Ruto was accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma, Senator Kathuri Murungi, and several area Members of Parliament. Also present were Cabinet Secretary Eric Muga (Water) and Principal Secretaries Patrick Kilemi (Cooperatives), Gitonga Mugambi (Forestry), Bety Njagi (Blue Economy), Alex Wachira, and Mary Muthoni (Public Health).
Addressing the congregation, the President emphasized the importance of prioritizing development over premature election campaigns.
“Elections will be held in 2027, and like before, they will be held in one day—not two or more,” Ruto stated. “What we need now is work. Leaders must stop politicking from Monday to Sunday, January to December. That is what has made this country lag.”
Ruto announced that his administration plans to construct a State Lodge in Meru Town, saying the facility would make it easier for him and future presidents to stay in the region while conducting official duties.
He further revealed that plans are underway to elevate Meru Town to city status, noting that it has been earmarked to become Kenya’s sixth city after Eldoret.
“We want to ensure that Meru becomes the next city after Eldoret, with both the national and county governments working together to make this happen,” Ruto said.
The President’s visit comes amid ongoing calls for unity and development across the Mt Kenya East region. His message appeared to urge calm among political leaders and focus attention on delivering tangible results ahead of the 2027 elections.
