Kenyans have criticized the Social Health Authority (SHA) after President William Ruto stepped in to clear the remaining KSh 2 million hospital bill for Mama Kioi, wife of Kikuyu Benga musician Kamande wa Kioi.
The lawmaker relayed on social media that the SHA and the family had already contributed over KSh 1.5 million, leaving a KSh 2 million deficit. “Mama Kioi was unwell but has recovered at a private hospital in Nairobi. SHA and the family were able to pay over KSh 1.5 million, leaving a balance of KSh 2 million,” stated MP Maina.
On the same post, the lawmaker thanked President Ruto for the intervention. “Special thanks to H.E the President, Dr William Ruto. I reached out to him yesterday on behalf of the family, and today he gave me KSh 2 million that I have given to the family. Be blessed H.E. Good health be your portion, Mama Kioi.”
However, Kenyans online expressed frustration over SHA’s inability to clear the full bill. Many questioned why the President had to step in, pointing out that not everyone has the means or connections to approach the head of state.
“How many of us can reach the President? We don’t need politicians’ mercy – we need a working system,” one netizen commented. Others highlighted that SHA paid less than half of the total bill despite the scheme’s mandate to cover hospital costs.
Some users also criticized the MP for publicly praising the President instead of holding SHA accountable. Following the backlash, the lawmaker restricted comments on the post.
Since its rollout in October 2024, the SHA has faced multiple challenges, from patients claiming it barely covers bills to hospitals rejecting it, as well as involvement in multi-billion-shilling fraud cases. This incident has reignited the debate over the effectiveness and accessibility of Kenya’s national health insurance system.
