President William Ruto has defended the late Raila Odinga’s decision to support the formation of a broad-based government, describing it as a move rooted in patriotism and foresight. Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County on Monday, October 20, 2025, Ruto paid glowing tribute to the former Prime Minister, crediting him for always putting Kenya’s peace and stability above political ambition.
Ruto echoed Raila’s long-held belief that a nation’s progress depends on unity and tolerance, even amid political differences. “Those who criticised Baba for working with us to stabilise the nation forget that there are countries which were once stable but later descended into turmoil and disorder,” Ruto said.
He noted that Raila understood the delicate balance between political ambition and national stability, often reminding leaders that dreams of prosperity are meaningless without a peaceful and stable nation. “For Agwambo, the spectre of a failed nation was too grave to contemplate,” Ruto stated.
The President described Raila as a true statesman whose legacy would endure beyond politics. “Above all, Raila told us that an imperfect nation striving for perfection is far better than one consumed by anarchy and chaos,” he said, drawing applause from the crowd.
Ruto’s remarks came just a day after Raila’s burial in Bondo, Siaya County, where thousands gathered to bid farewell to the ODM leader. The Head of State urged Kenyans to honour Raila’s legacy by fostering dialogue, peace, and unity.
“As we celebrate our heroes today, let us remember that Raila Odinga’s dream was not just for a democratic Kenya but for a united, peaceful, and prosperous one. That is the dream we must all protect,” Ruto concluded.
