President William Ruto has officially designated August 27 as Katiba Day, an annual commemoration of the promulgation of Kenya’s 2010 Constitution. The announcement was made through a presidential proclamation dated August 25, 2025.
The first observance will take place on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, coinciding with the 15th anniversary of the Constitution. Ruto emphasized that while Katiba Day will be observed every year, it will remain a working day rather than a public holiday.
“I, William Samoei Ruto, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution, do hereby proclaim THAT: 27th August, 2025, and every 27th Day in the Month of August forever thereafter shall be observed as ‘Katiba Day’ in commemoration of the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010,” the proclamation reads.
The Head of State described the adoption of the 2010 Constitution as a “defining moment in our nation’s history,” ushering in a new era of citizen-centered governance, devolution, equitable development, and the safeguarding of fundamental freedoms.
Katiba Day will be observed both within Kenya and in the country’s diplomatic missions abroad. It is intended to serve as a national reflection on constitutionalism, governance, and the collective aspirations of a just and prosperous society.
Ruto explained that the day would not only commemorate the past but also renew Kenya’s commitment to upholding constitutional ideals. Government institutions, schools, counties, and other state organs have been directed to organize civic activities that promote constitutional awareness and dialogue.
“It is befitting for the people of Kenya to commemorate this day as a reminder of our collective duty to obey, preserve, protect, and implement the Constitution,” Ruto said.
He stressed that the Constitution embodies the sovereign will of Kenyans and remains a transformative milestone in the country’s democratic journey. By institutionalizing Katiba Day, the President underscored the need for continuous civic engagement to nurture a culture of constitutionalism and respect for the rule of law.
