President William Ruto has paid a heartfelt and emotional tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a gallant patriot and a tireless champion of democracy.
In a moving handwritten message recorded in Parliament’s condolence book, Ruto reflected on both the personal and national impact Raila had on his life and Kenya’s democratic journey. The President’s words stood out for their depth of sincerity and acknowledgment of the late leader’s enduring influence.
“Baba Agwambo Raila Amolo Odinga, you inspired many to stand up for democracy, justice, equity, and fairness. You have made an indelible mark on the history of Kenya as a gallant patriot who put Kenya first,” Ruto wrote.
The President went on to recall how Raila once offered him support during a challenging period in his political life.
“You helped me when I needed someone to stand by me the same way I once stood by you. Baba, you may have departed, but we will work hard to honour what you stood for,” he added.
Ruto’s tribute was widely received as one of the most genuine acknowledgements of Raila’s legacy by a sitting President. His message came as Kenyans from all walks of life leaders, citizens, and foreign dignitaries paid their final respects to Raila, whose body lay in state in Parliament ahead of the state funeral at Nyayo Stadium.
Raila Odinga, aged 80, passed away on October 15, 2025, in India, where he was undergoing treatment. His death has united the nation in grief and reflection, reminding Kenyans of his lifelong pursuit of justice, equity, and democracy.
President Ruto’s tribute not only honoured Raila’s monumental legacy but also symbolised unity and reconciliation, bridging decades of political rivalry in a moment of shared national mourning.
