During his YouTube show on Monday, popular media personality Obinna revealed that he narrowly escaped a plot against him, which he claims was foiled by President William Ruto. According to Obinna, he received credible intelligence that a rogue unit was planning to target him following his tell-all interview with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Obinna explained that several sources confirmed the threat, including an external party present during the discussions, a prominent media personality, and another individual described as having “deep state” connections.
“After I interviewed Riggy G, there were some people who wanted to do me bad. The person who stopped them was the President,” Obinna said. He added that he had been warned by the President through an intermediary:
“Leave the young man alone. If we start beating young men, what exactly are we doing? Leave him alone; he has done nothing wrong. Let him do his thing. Nobody should touch him.”
Even before receiving that direct warning, Obinna claimed that a well-known journalist had alerted him about the looming threat, warning him to stay vigilant as his movements were being monitored. Another source with deep government connections reportedly confirmed the plot, giving Obinna confidence that President Ruto had intervened to protect him.
Obinna’s revelations follow his explosive interview with Gachagua in May, where the former Deputy President spoke about his fallout with the President, the 2022 election build-up, his impeachment, and corruption allegations. The interview also touched on the violence that marred Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) launch.
Reflecting on the tense period after the interview, Obinna recalled the anxiety he felt while driving home. “Every time I saw a police roadblock, I froze. There were so many roadblocks. I didn’t even want to drive home last night. Pray for me. I’ve brought this on myself!” he admitted, laughing nervously.
Obinna’s account underscores the intense political climate in Kenya and highlights the unexpected role President Ruto played in preventing a potential threat to a media figure following sensitive political revelations.
