Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed that the recent meeting between President William Ruto and KANU chairman Gideon Moi is part of wider political preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Thursday evening during the Jukwa La Usalama Forum, Murkomen described Moi’s decision to meet Ruto and step back from active competition as a wise and dignified political move. According to him, the KANU leader’s action demonstrated political maturity and a commitment to national unity.
“Gideon Moi has done a wise thing; it could have seemed very bad if he had continued to run for the seat. There is a stage you reach where you cannot compete with young people for a political seat,” Murkomen said.
The CS added that although some of Moi’s supporters might have been disappointed by his withdrawal from the Baringo senatorial race, the move preserved his reputation and allowed him to play a bigger unifying role in national politics.
Murkomen further explained that the meeting between Ruto and Moi at State House was symbolic of the ongoing formation of a broad-based government that brings together leaders from different political backgrounds, including allies of Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“The meeting with the President was also a sign of unity because, as you are aware, there is a broad-based government which has Raila and Uhuru’s allies in it. Gideon Moi has been invited to be part of it. We are also looking ahead to 2027 so that we can come together,” Murkomen stated.
KANU Secretary General George Wainaina confirmed that the party will not field a candidate in the Baringo senatorial race, a move seen as a boost for Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Reports indicate that Ruto and Moi have held a series of meetings in recent weeks, culminating in Moi’s decision to step aside in favor of political cooperation.
