President William Ruto has led Kenyans in mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a patriot and towering political figure whose legacy will forever be engraved in the nation’s history.
Speaking from State House, Nairobi, on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, President Ruto declared seven days of national mourning in honour of the late opposition leader. He directed that flags fly at half-mast across Kenya and in all missions abroad as a mark of respect.
Ruto eulogized Raila as a “once-in-a-generation leader” whose lifelong struggle for democracy, justice, and equality reshaped Kenya’s governance and political identity.
“For decades, Raila dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, equity, and freedom,” Ruto said. “He endured detention and persecution so that this nation might know and enjoy democracy. He championed reforms that gave birth to the rights and freedoms we hold dear today.”
The President praised Raila’s unwavering commitment to democratic ideals, describing him as “an indomitable warrior in our struggle for freedom and prosperity, and a statesman of boundless selflessness.”
Ruto added that Raila’s influence extended beyond politics, noting that his ideals transcended party lines. “Raila Amolo Odinga was truly a giant who towered for decades over our democratic landscape,” he said.
Despite years of political rivalry, Ruto acknowledged the personal and political bond they had built, emphasizing the need for national unity during this period of mourning.
“Let us come together as one people, bound by the love of our country and respect for a man whose sacrifice helped shape the Republic we call home,” he urged.
Raila Odinga, who passed away in Kochi, India, will be remembered as a revolutionary, reformist, and symbol of Kenya’s enduring struggle for democracy and justice.
