President William Ruto has mocked his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, saying his lack of education made him unfit for the role.
Speaking at State House on Saturday, September 13, 2025, during a meeting with teachers, Ruto recalled the challenges he faced while working with Gachagua.
“Nilikua na mwingine analalamika, hajasoma, hahaha, nikaona ataniangusha,” he said, sparking laughter from the crowd.
Praise for Kindiki
Ruto compared Gachagua to his current deputy, Kithure Kindiki. He described Kindiki as “an education giant” and a reliable partner in leadership.
“Huyu naibu wangu mnamwona aje, ni noma si noma, ni fire si fire. Ukihitaji kufaulu, unatafuta deputy amesoma kuliko wewe,” Ruto said.
Intelligence Matters in Leadership
The president stressed that a successful leader surrounds himself with smart and capable people.
“If you want to succeed, you put people around you who are more intelligent than you. They help you shine, you take the credit, but they are the ones doing the job,” he noted.
Ruto Touts His Experience
A day earlier, Ruto declared himself the most educated Kenyan president ever elected. He pointed to his 15 years as a Member of Parliament and 10 years as Deputy President under Uhuru Kenyatta.
“I have no excuse; that is why I must transform this country. We are very late. Let’s, for once, focus on changing the country,” he said.
A New Political Chapter
Ruto’s remarks highlight the changing dynamics in his leadership. By sidelining Gachagua and elevating Kindiki, the president is signaling a shift towards valuing education and intelligence in governance.
