President William Ruto has penned a deeply emotional tribute to the late Raila Amolo Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister and opposition leader, promising to remain faithful to their shared vision for the country’s future.
In a message written in the condolence book at Parliament Buildings, Ruto described Raila as “the spirit of our democracy” and a patriot whose lifelong sacrifices helped shape Kenya’s destiny.
“Baba Agwambo, you became the spirit of our democracy through prison storms and betrayals, but you were faithful to the highest calling of being a Kenyan patriot,” Ruto wrote.
Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at an Ayurvedic hospital in Kerala, India. His death has led to a seven-day period of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast and a state funeral being planned.
President Ruto also declared Friday, October 17, a public holiday in honor of Raila’s legacy and immense contribution to Kenya’s democracy.
Reflecting on their political journey, Ruto acknowledged both the rivalry and respect that defined their relationship. “My elder brother, fare thee well. I will be faithful to what you and I agreed on the future of Kenya,” he added, hinting at a private understanding between the two leaders beyond partisan divides.
Raila’s body was received at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with full military honors and now lies at Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi. Memorial services are planned in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Bondo, where he will be laid to rest beside his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
Ruto’s tribute has been echoed by messages of condolence from global leaders, civil society, and Kenyans across the nation, all mourning a man whose life embodied courage, resilience, and hope.
