President William Ruto has pledged government jobs for Maurice Ogeta, the long-serving bodyguard of the late Raila Odinga, and other members of his close security team. The President made the announcement during Raila’s funeral service at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University in Bondo, Siaya County.
Ruto praised Ogeta and his colleagues for their unwavering dedication and loyalty to the veteran opposition leader, describing them as symbols of service and commitment.
“I must thank his security people, Maurice Ogeta especially, for standing with Raila always. I remember him in our days in ODM when he would even wipe our shoes when we came late for campaigns,” said Ruto.
The President assured mourners that the government would look after those who served closely with Raila, recognizing their contribution to one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.
“Maurice, I want to tell you that as this government preserves Raila’s legacy, we will also take care of you and all those who looked after him,” he added, drawing applause from the crowd.
Ogeta, who was also Raila’s nephew, shared a deep bond with the former Prime Minister, whom he served faithfully for over 18 years. He was by Raila’s side in India during his final days and accompanied his body back to Kenya.
During the public viewing in Parliament and subsequent events in Kisumu, Ogeta was visibly emotional, earning public sympathy for his steadfast loyalty.
In a heartfelt tribute, Ogeta described Raila as a mentor, father figure, and comrade:
“From the opportunity you entrusted to me as your Personal Aide for close to 18 years, I confess I know no other human being on the African continent who came close to you outside Nelson Mandela.”
Ruto’s gesture was widely viewed as a mark of respect toward Raila’s long-serving aides and a commitment to honouring his enduring legacy.
