Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of plotting to sponsor a presidential candidate from Murang’a.
Speaking on Friday, September 12, 2025, after a meeting with Murang’a MCAs, Gachagua said the move was aimed at dividing the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua’s Claims
According to Gachagua, President Ruto has shifted focus from development to succession politics. He claimed the Head of State was misleading Murang’a residents by telling them it was their turn to lead.
“Even today, President Ruto is cheating the people of Murang’a, who have never led, and saying it is their time. We know he is sponsoring a candidate from Murang’a to divide the people,” Gachagua said.
The Democracy for Citizens Party leader likened Ruto’s strategy to giving Murang’a a “small blue wheelbarrow” in exchange for political loyalty.
Attack on State House
Gachagua dismissed recent meetings between Ruto and Murang’a leaders. He argued that the forums were not about development but about weakening Mt Kenya’s political bloc.
“Nothing constructive is happening in State House. President William Ruto is on a mission to divide Mt Kenya before 2027, hoping the votes will be split,” he declared.
Mt Kenya Unity
The former deputy president expressed confidence that Murang’a residents would not fall for what he called “political lies.” He described them as wise and politically aware.
“Bad news is that the people of Murang’a are wise. Nobody can deceive them anymore,” he added.
Growing Rift
The remarks show the growing political rift between Ruto and his former deputy. With 2027 approaching, the battle for Mt Kenya’s unity is expected to shape succession politics in Kenya.
