President William Ruto has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Nairobi into a modern, sustainable, and inclusive capital through a series of strategic interventions in housing, infrastructure, education, sanitation, and environmental restoration.
Speaking in Kibera on Sunday, the President announced that KSh500 million will be allocated in the upcoming financial year to address illegal electricity connections in informal settlements. These unsafe connections have been linked to deadly fires, including a recent one in Kibera that claimed three lives. Ruto, who visited the victims and donated food and household items, assured residents that the government would cover medical expenses for the injured.
He also revealed plans to donate land for a fire station in Kibera, signaling increased investment in emergency response infrastructure. Emphasizing improved living conditions, the President reported that 60,000 housing units are under construction in Nairobi, including 25,000 in Kibra and Lang’ata. Last week, he handed over keys to 1,080 homeowners in New Mukuru Estate, where over 13,200 more units are being built.
“Our Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda is becoming a reality,” he said. “People at the bottom of the economic pyramid are moving into decent estates.”
On infrastructure, Ruto said the government has allocated KSh2.1 billion for city road upgrades, while thousands of classrooms are under construction as part of a school facilities upgrade programme. He is personally funding 240 classrooms in Nairobi and announced that 24,000 more teachers will be recruited next year, adding to the 76,000 hired in the past two years.
Environmental conservation efforts are also expanding. The Nairobi River Basin Regeneration programme currently employs 20,000 youth to clean the city’s rivers and will soon create jobs for over 50,000.
The President urged Kenyans to register with the Social Health Authority, emphasizing that quality healthcare is a constitutional right. He reiterated his goal to ensure equity across all sectors and vowed to continue fostering national unity.
President Ruto was accompanied by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku, MPs, and other local leaders.
