Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has issued a bold ultimatum to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), declaring that he will not seek re-election on the party’s ticket if its ongoing cooperation with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government continues.
Speaking during an interview on Spice FM on Tuesday, Amisi expressed deep frustration over what he described as growing confusion within ODM and disillusionment among its grassroots supporters. He stressed that the party must urgently decide whether to return to its ideological roots or continue its controversial collaboration with the government.
“ODM must make a decision now. There’s confusion even among its supporters. Some don’t agree with the broad-based agreement, while others are saying we’ve finally joined government, let’s enjoy it. I don’t know what they are enjoying,” Amisi remarked.
He criticized the working arrangement with the Kenya Kwanza administration, saying it undermines the party’s legacy and the long-standing sacrifices of its followers. According to Amisi, ODM is drifting away from its role as a strong opposition force, one that historically championed democracy, justice, and good governance.
The legislator did not mince words about the state of the party, comparing it to a “Disco Matanga” a traditional vigil for the dead where people sing and dance before the burial. “Basically, ODM is dead. We are now dancing, waiting for the burial day,” he said, urging the leadership to act swiftly.
Despite his criticisms, Amisi emphasized his continued respect for ODM leader Raila Odinga, cautioning younger politicians against insulting the former Prime Minister. “Even if we don’t agree, Raila deserves respect for the role he has played in Kenya’s democratic journey,” he said.
Amisi’s remarks come amid growing divisions within ODM over its political direction. His comments are likely to further ignite internal debate as the party grapples with its identity in the current political landscape. As 2027 draws closer, such dissent may signal broader discontent within the party’s ranks.
