Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has spoken warmly about President William Ruto, describing him as a hardworking and misunderstood leader. Speaking during an interview with Milele FM on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Sakaja revealed the people who inspire his leadership—both locally and globally.
“For me, globally, it’s Barack Obama. Locally, it’s our President and Raila Amollo Odinga,” Sakaja said, adding that he admires Raila Odinga for his resilience and sacrifices in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.
Sakaja went further to express deep respect for President Ruto’s dedication, saying, “I love the President’s work ethic. Leave me, he is the most misunderstood politician.” His remarks painted a picture of admiration for Ruto’s relentless drive and focus in steering the nation forward, despite widespread criticism.
The governor noted that both Ruto and Raila embody leadership qualities that have shaped his own approach to governance — vision, endurance, and commitment to service.
Sakaja’s comments come weeks after a period of political tension in Nairobi County. In September 2025, the governor met ODM leader Raila Odinga and ODM-allied Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF). The meeting, held behind closed doors, aimed to ease tensions following the MCAs’ push for Sakaja’s impeachment.
During the meeting, Raila reportedly urged the MCAs to suspend their impeachment plans to allow for dialogue and reconciliation. ODM Nairobi chairman George Aladwa later confirmed that the ward representatives had agreed to halt the process for one month.
Aladwa revealed that Sakaja had acknowledged the issues raised and apologised, leading to a temporary truce that allowed the governor to refocus on leadership and rebuild relations with the Assembly.
The reconciliation has since given Sakaja an opportunity to mend political divisions at City Hall and strengthen his administration’s working relationship with the County Assembly.
