Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has vowed to appoint former Chief Justice David Maraga as his Attorney General should he clinch the presidency in the 2027 General Elections.
Taking to his official X account on Wednesday night, June 18, 2025, Salasya praised Maraga for his integrity and moral uprightness, describing him as a leader with an exemplary record of ethical conduct.
“I will nominate Maraga as my Attorney General. In his career, he demonstrated high moral character and compliance with ethical standards,” Salasya wrote.
The unexpected endorsement adds an intriguing twist to Kenya’s evolving political landscape, especially since Maraga himself has declared his intention to run for president in the same election. In an interview with NTV on the same day, Maraga announced his presidential bid, saying Kenya urgently needs ethical, accountable, and visionary leadership.
“After serious reflection, I thought it was time we reconsidered the leadership of this country. We can’t let some people drag our country through the mud,” Maraga stated. “As a result of that reflection, I have made up my mind that I will run in 2027 for the presidency.”
Maraga served as Kenya’s Chief Justice from 2016 to 2021 and is widely respected for his principled stance on constitutionalism and the rule of law most notably nullifying the 2017 presidential election results in a landmark ruling.
Salasya, a first-term MP under the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), has been actively traversing the country to build momentum for his presidential bid. Known for his unconventional approach and energetic persona, he recently hinted at plans to recruit prayer warriors and intercessors into his campaign team.
In a recent Instagram post, Salasya linked his campaign activities to the resolution of the murder of teacher Albert Ojwang’, saying he would resume campaigns once the culprits are identified.
As both Salasya and Maraga gear up for the 2027 race, their emerging alliance even amid mutual presidential ambitions signals a reshaping of Kenya’s political alliances, grounded on themes of ethics, integrity, and faith.
