Security has been significantly heightened at the Nairobi and Bondo homes of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga ahead of his burial scheduled for Sunday. The National Security Council (NSC), chaired by President William Ruto, convened on Wednesday and ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to both locations to ensure a smooth and peaceful farewell.
The move follows reports of chaos and security breaches during the arrival of Odinga’s body from India, where he passed away after suffering a heart attack. Police cited fears of possible disorder among mourners, as several individuals had complained of harassment and robbery by goons mingling with supporters.
In Nairobi, roadblocks have been erected on routes leading to Odinga’s residence. Authorities also intensified surveillance around key areas associated with the funeral arrangements. A similar operation has been mounted in Bondo, Siaya County, where thousands are expected to attend the burial ceremony.
The situation escalated on Thursday when rowdy crowds breached major security installations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) during the arrival of the body. Boda boda riders and emotional supporters forced their way into restricted areas, momentarily overwhelming security officers.
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) temporarily closed airspace over JKIA for two hours to facilitate enhanced security rescreening, diverting seven flights. “The safety and security of our passengers, staff, and all airport users is our highest priority,” said KAA Acting Managing Director Mohamed Gedi.
Due to the crowd surge, plans for a public viewing at Parliament Buildings were canceled and relocated to Kasarani Stadium. Security was also reinforced at Lee Funeral Home after reports of a potential breach.
Authorities say the measures are precautionary to prevent further chaos and ensure Raila Odinga’s burial proceeds in a dignified and orderly manner.
