The Senate has officially announced a Special Sitting on August 20, 2025, to deliberate on the impeachment charges filed against Kericho Governor Eric K. Mutai. The sitting, gazetted by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, will take place in the Senate Chamber at Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, starting at 2:30 p.m.
The development follows a formal communication from Kericho County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai, which was received by Kingi’s office on Monday. The letter outlined the Assembly’s resolution, passed on August 15, to impeach Governor Mutai over allegations of misappropriation of public and donor funds, abuse of office, and authorizing illegal payments to contractors.
“All 33 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted in favor of the motion, following a tense day-long session in which Governor Mutai mounted a spirited defense. This marks the second attempt to remove him from office,” the letter read.
The impeachment motion was spearheaded by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, who accused Governor Mutai of illegally disbursing Sh85 million to contractors for incomplete or non-existent projects. Mutai, however, has rejected the claims, describing them as politically motivated.
The upcoming Special Sitting will follow a structured procedure, allowing senators to review the evidence presented by both sides before making a determination. Should the Senate uphold the County Assembly’s decision, Governor Mutai will be officially removed from office. Conversely, overturning the motion would allow him to continue in his role.
