The Senate will convene for a special sitting on Monday, June 30, 2025, to deliberate on the impeachment of Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the sitting, which is set to begin at 10:00 am at the Senate Chamber in Nairobi, following official communication from the County Assembly of Isiolo.
The Assembly, in a letter dated June 26 and received by the Senate on June 27, notified Speaker Kingi of its decision to impeach Governor Guyo. The letter confirmed the Assembly’s approval of a motion to remove the governor from office through impeachment, triggering the next constitutional step Senate scrutiny.
Speaker Kingi emphasized the importance of the sitting in his statement: “I have appointed Monday, June 30, 2025, as a day for a special sitting of the Senate. The sitting shall be held in the Senate Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, commencing at 10.00 am.”
Governor Guyo’s impeachment was passed overwhelmingly on Thursday, with 16 out of 18 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voting in favour. Two members were absent during the session, and notably, none opposed the motion. The impeachment motion was executed under Standing Orders, and the proceedings noted that Governor Guyo did not present himself before the Assembly to defend himself, despite being issued a formal invitation.
His absence was formally recorded, allowing the Assembly to proceed without his representation. The charges against him have not yet been made public, but the next phase will see the Senate determine whether the grounds for impeachment meet the constitutional threshold.
According to Kenya’s Constitution, once a governor is impeached by the county assembly, the Senate must investigate the charges and either uphold or overturn the impeachment. If upheld, the governor is officially removed from office.
This development marks a critical moment in Isiolo County’s political landscape and places the Senate at the center of yet another high-stakes leadership decision. All eyes will now be on Monday’s session, which is expected to shed light on the accusations leveled against Governor Guyo and determine his political fate.
