Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei and Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba have called for the immediate resignation of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, accusing him of failing to address rising insecurity in the Kerio Valley region. Their demands follow the recent killing of Rev. Fr. Allois Cheruiyot Bett of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish in Elgeyo Marakwet, allegedly by bandits.
In a scathing post on X, Senator Cherargei criticized Murkomen for being “incorrigible, incompetent, and lazy,” asserting that the transfer of the CS from the Transport docket to Interior has worsened the security situation. “Transferring incompetence to the Ministry of Interior is dangerous because you lose lives,” he said. “This minister should be called out. He is embarrassing all of us in government.”
Cherargei further accused Murkomen of trying to mislead the public by directing the police to downplay the incident, claiming the priest’s murder was not related to banditry. “We shall not allow him to malign the priest in death,” he said, adding that the region has been under attack from bandits for several days, with multiple fatalities reported.
MP Wamuchomba echoed Cherargei’s sentiments, arguing that Murkomen has failed in his new role. “Murkomen should just resign and join the noisemakers. He performed better there,” she posted. The MP also took a swipe at Defence CS Aden Duale, telling him to “keep quiet and only speak when health workers are properly employed and remunerated.”
Wamuchomba described the murder of the Catholic priest as “heartbreaking” and suggested that growing unrest is brewing. “The 1 T spirit is in the air,” she warned, referring to the wave of public discontent that has recently rocked the government.
Both leaders reminded Kenyans that Murkomen and Duale were once vocal critics of insecurity during the Uhuru Kenyatta administration, but now face similar accusations under President Ruto’s government. Their calls add pressure on the administration to act decisively in restoring security and public confidence in the troubled North Rift region.
