Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has confidently declared that President William Ruto’s re-election in 2027 is inevitable, citing what he terms as the Head of State’s commendable track record and a weak, disorganised opposition.
Speaking on Citizen TV on May 15, 2025, Cherargei asserted that President Ruto is on course to secure a second term with ease. The outspoken senator highlighted key achievements of the Kenya Kwanza administration, including the daily registration of 70,000 Kenyans into the Social Health Authority (SHA), the construction of over 15,000 classrooms to address the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) challenges, and the hiring of 70,000 teachers.
“President Ruto has proven his commitment to reforms and development. Affordable housing is at 90% completion and youths are engaged through programs like Talanta Hela,” Cherargei stated.
He dismissed any suggestion of a strong political rival emerging before the 2027 general election, claiming that the opposition lacks cohesion and credible leadership to mount a serious challenge.
However, not everyone agrees with the senator’s optimistic outlook. City lawyer Willis Otieno, who was also part of the Citizen TV panel, challenged Cherargei’s claims, arguing that many Kenyans are increasingly frustrated with the government’s performance.
“People are angrier today than they were last year. If President Ruto hasn’t delivered on his promises in the first term, why would he deserve a second?” Otieno questioned.
Despite the criticism, President Ruto has remained defiant and confident about his re-election prospects. During a rally in Runyenjes, Embu County, on April 5, 2025, Ruto assured supporters that he would defeat his opponents by a landslide in 2027, emphasizing that his focus remains on fulfilling his 2022 campaign pledges.
“My priority is to serve Kenyans and deliver on the promises we made. When the time comes, Kenyans will judge us by our performance,” Ruto said.
Meanwhile, the opposition has launched an aggressive campaign to deny Ruto a second term, with his estranged former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, reportedly taking a central role in mobilising support against the President.
