Senator Crystal Asige has condemned Sirisia MP John Waluke after a video surfaced showing him mocking a man of short stature. The incident happened during a Jukwaa La Usalama forum on Friday. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen was also present.
In the video, MP Waluke asked the man to run across the dais and salute like a police officer. The crowd, including CS Murkomen, laughed at the man. The clip sparked public outrage, raising concerns about how persons with disabilities are treated in public spaces.
Asige Calls Out Leaders
On Saturday, Senator Asige, who sponsored the recently assented Persons With Disabilities Act, spoke out. She said she had already addressed the matter with the leaders at the forum.
“An incredibly disappointing video where leaders are taking part in mocking a person of short stature. I will not reshare for the dignity of the gentleman, but I’ve let my thoughts be known to the leaders,” Asige said.
She added that the Act should make leaders think twice before publicly humiliating disabled persons.
“We may be disabled, but our votes are not. Leaders should keep their negative feelings about persons with disabilities to themselves,” she stated.
Context of the Incident
The mockery came up during discussions on hiring persons with disabilities in the police workforce. Instead of presenting valid arguments, MP Waluke chose to ridicule the man. This suggested that some public spaces were “not suitable” for persons with disabilities, which goes against the spirit of the law.
Government Push for Inclusivity
President William Ruto assented to the Persons With Disabilities Act on May 8. He directed all government institutions to promote inclusion. He also reinstated the Disability Mainstreaming Performance Indicator in public service contracts. This is part of efforts to strengthen disability inclusion in the public sector.
Senator Asige’s response highlights the need for respect and awareness for persons with disabilities. She reminded leaders that public humiliation has no place in a society working toward dignity and inclusivity.
