Migori Senator Eddy Oketch has hit out at Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. He claims the two are more focused on personal ambition than public service.
Speaking during a TV interview on Monday, September 8, 2025, Oketch said both leaders are influenced by what he called the “Sakaja effect.” He argued that the rise of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has made some leaders chase political power for self-gain.
“There is a lot of greed in government. Kenya Kwanza is about survival. MP Babu Owino and Senator Edwin Sifuna seem to be suffering from the ‘Sakaja effect,’” Oketch said.
He went further to criticize Babu Owino. According to Oketch, the Embakasi East MP is preparing to leave ODM so that he can run for Nairobi governor in 2027.
“Babu has said many times he wants to vie for governor. He does not believe ODM will give him the ticket. This is his excuse to plan for a race outside the party,” Oketch added.
Last week, Babu Owino admitted he is unlikely to get ODM’s support for the Nairobi seat. Speaking on Kameme TV on September 4, he said Raila Odinga’s body language shows that ODM has another preferred candidate.
“I am sure I will not get the ODM ticket to vie for Nairobi Governor in 2027. Sakaja was endorsed by Raila at Bomas during the AUC prayer meeting,” Owino said.
Still, he pledged respect for Raila, calling him his political godfather. However, he admitted feeling sidelined in ODM politics.
“There is still time to make things right,” Babu noted, leaving his next move open.
