A senior official was arrested on Thursday in connection with the murder of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu. The killing took place on September 9, 2025, along Magadi Road in Nairobi.
Police say the case may be linked to an unresolved financial matter. The exact role of the senior official is still unclear. He is among six people currently being questioned.
Money Recovered from Suspects
Authorities recovered a large sum of money from the homes of those detained. Investigators used money-counting machines to verify the cash.
Some of the suspects said they were friends of the late lawyer. “They are in custody as part of the inquiry and have described themselves as friends of the deceased,” said a police official.
Investigation Ongoing
Police are still trying to identify the firearm used and any other people involved. Some suspects reportedly met Mbobu at a restaurant hours before he was killed. Investigators are looking for additional individuals who could clarify the meeting along Jakaya Kikwete Road.
Sources indicate that some of those detained were clients of the lawyer. Several clients have given statements regarding their dealings with him.
Mbobu was shot multiple times at close range while driving. A gunman on a motorcycle intercepted him, firing at his neck and chest. The attacker then fled, reportedly shooting into the air.
Authorities Respond
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Mulele Ingong, has instructed police to fast-track investigations and submit a status report within seven days. He also expressed condolences to the lawyer’s family and the legal community.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen condemned the killing, calling it tragic. Speaking in Migori County, he said some persons of interest had been identified and urged the public to provide information. Murkomen emphasized that the investigation will be fair and aim for justice for all.
