A senior police officer was among two people who lost their lives in a tragic road accident on Saturday night, June 28, 2025, along the Narok-Mai Mahiu highway.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 10:00 p.m. near the Duka Moja area and involved a Scania trailer, a Toyota Prado TX, and a Toyota G-Touring. Police reports indicate that the Scania trailer, which was heading from Narok towards Mai Mahiu, veered off its lane and collided head-on with the oncoming Prado.
The Prado was being driven by Chief Inspector George Rotich Kipchumba, a respected senior officer stationed at the Narok Traffic Base. Following the initial impact, the Prado was pushed into the path of another vehicle, a Toyota G-Touring, which was being driven by 45-year-old Nicholas Mwiti.
Both Chief Inspector Kipchumba and the trailer driver, whose identity remains unknown, died on the spot due to the severity of the impact. Their bodies were later taken to the Narok County Referral Hospital mortuary, where postmortem examinations are expected to be conducted.
A passenger who was travelling in the Prado suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to the Narok County Referral Hospital for emergency treatment. Additionally, four passengers who were in the trailer sustained various injuries and were also taken to the same facility for medical attention. Their identities have not been released.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the circumstances that led to the fatal crash. Preliminary findings suggest that driver error may have been a significant factor, with the trailer’s deviation into oncoming traffic likely triggering the multi-vehicle collision.
The tragic incident has sparked renewed concerns over safety on the Narok-Mai Mahiu highway, a route known for heavy commercial and passenger traffic. Motorists are urged to exercise heightened caution, especially at night, and to adhere strictly to traffic rules.
The police have assured the public that they are working to identify the deceased trailer driver and determine the cause of the accident. Meanwhile, the families of the victims are mourning the loss of their loved ones, with Chief Inspector Kipchumba remembered for his dedication and service to road safety.
