Several protesters were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on Tuesday, June 25, 2025, after allegedly being shot by police during the ongoing Gen Z demonstrations in Nairobi. The protests, marked by intense confrontations between police and demonstrators, are being held to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the deadly June 25, 2024, anti-Finance Bill protests that left over 60 people dead.
Videos from outside KNH showed ambulances arriving around noon, bringing in wounded protesters, some of whom had sustained serious injuries. Witnesses said at least five individuals were seen being wheeled into the casualty department, with some reportedly hit by bullets and tear gas canisters.
“He was hit by a canister on the cheek all his jaws are out and can be seen,” said one protester, visibly shaken as he spoke about his injured friend. The full extent of the casualties remains unclear, but several others are reported to have been taken to different hospitals across the city for emergency care.
Despite heavy police presence, tear gas, and aerial surveillance by helicopters, the protesters remained defiant. Business operations in Nairobi were brought to a standstill as demonstrators, mainly young Kenyans, marched through the streets, calling for justice, accountability, and an end to police brutality.
Among those teargassed was former Chief Justice David Maraga, who joined the demonstrations in solidarity with the youth. Maraga led peaceful marches through the city before the crowd was dispersed by police officers using tear gas.
Protests were not limited to Nairobi. Similar demonstrations were witnessed in other parts of the country, including Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyeri, Homa Bay, Makueni, and Machakos.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto attended the burial of Mzee Mung’aro Senior, father to Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro, in Kilifi County. His absence from the capital during such a pivotal moment drew criticism from some quarters.
As calls for police accountability grow louder, human rights groups have urged the government to address the growing concerns of Gen Z protesters and ensure medical care for the injured.
