Siaya Governor James Orengo has condemned in the strongest terms the fatal shooting of former County Assembly Clerk Felix Isaac Olwero, calling for swift and thorough investigations to ensure justice is served.
Olwero, who was also the husband of Siaya County CECM for Sports, Angeline Oduor, was shot dead on Monday morning outside his restaurant in Kombewa, Kisumu County. Police initially claimed that Olwero was involved in a burglary attempt at White House Resort, but later declared the incident a case of mistaken identity.
Governor Orengo expressed deep shock and devastation over the loss. “We condemn this heinous act in the strongest terms and demand swift, thorough investigations to ensure justice is served. No life should ever be cut short in such a senseless manner,” he said.
According to police reports, officers had been called to the resort following a case of a failed burglary. The manager of White House Resort had reported that a group of suspects was attempting to gain access to the facility, marking the fifth such attempt in recent days.
Police claimed they cordoned off the rear side of the resort upon spotting five men approaching, allegedly armed with pangas and other crude weapons. Officers said they attempted to scare the suspects by firing warning shots into the air, but the effort failed to compel surrender. In the confusion, they mistook Olwero, who had gone to the scene, for one of the suspects and fatally shot him.
Following the incident, the police launched an investigation and a team of detectives revisited the scene to gather evidence and establish the sequence of events leading to Olwero’s death. The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy.
Resort management highlighted that they had been facing repeated burglary attempts and called for sustained police patrols to curb the menace.
The tragic incident has raised concerns over the handling of security operations and the need for caution in law enforcement actions. The ongoing probe aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding Olwero’s death and ensure accountability for the fatal shooting.
