ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has reaffirmed his loyalty to Raila Odinga and vowed to safeguard the party’s identity ahead of the 2027 elections, dismissing claims that ODM’s strength relies solely on Raila.
Sifuna: ODM Identity Must Be Protected as Raila Instructed
ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has reaffirmed his loyalty to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and its founding leader, Raila Odinga, amid growing internal debates over the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a party event in Mombasa, Sifuna said he remains committed to upholding the principles and legacy of Raila Odinga, emphasizing that the party’s identity must remain intact regardless of emerging political realignments.
“I know right now many things are being said by everyone in the party, but what we can all agree on is what Raila told us. He told us to maintain the party so that in 2027 we produce our own candidate,” Sifuna stated.
He downplayed divisions within ODM, asserting that while internal disagreements are normal, Raila’s guidance provides a clear path: to protect and preserve the party’s foundation and unity.
Sifuna also rejected suggestions that ODM’s political power is tied solely to Raila, arguing that the party boasts a deep bench of capable leaders who can step up when the time comes.
“If today we decide to endorse our party leader, Oburu, Abdulswamad, or those other deputy party leaders, or even myself, we will surely win,” he said, underlining ODM’s strong grassroots base and organizational structure.
The Nairobi Senator further dismissed President William Ruto’s claims that Raila was the only credible challenger for 2027, insisting that ODM remains a formidable force with or without its veteran leader on the ballot.
Sifuna also cautioned against party members leaning towards the government-backed “broad-based” initiative, clarifying that while ODM supports dialogue and inclusivity, such efforts should not dilute the party’s identity or undermine its independence.
As ODM gears up for the 2027 elections, Sifuna’s message appears aimed at reinforcing internal cohesion and ensuring the party stays true to its founding ideals under Raila’s enduring influence.
