The late Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Were, will be laid to rest today in a ceremony expected to draw thousands of mourners, including national and county leaders, in his hometown in Homa Bay County. The legislator, who was tragically slain last week under circumstances that are still under investigation, will be accorded a state-level burial marked by heightened security.
Speaking ahead of the burial, Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilan urged residents to maintain peace and unity during the funeral proceedings. Addressing the media after chairing a high-level security meeting in his office, Lilan emphasized the importance of honoring the late MP with a dignified and peaceful sendoff.
“We are calling on everyone to come together and ensure the burial of our beloved MP is conducted in a respectful and calm manner. This is not the time for political rivalry or personal grievances. It is a time to celebrate the legacy of a leader who served his people with commitment,” Lilan said.
The County Commissioner also sounded a stern warning to individuals allegedly plotting to cause chaos during the burial. “We are aware of reports that some elements may try to disrupt the event. Let it be known that anyone who attempts to interfere with the peace will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law,” he warned.
Lilan added that comprehensive security arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety of all mourners. Security officers have been deployed in and around the burial site, and intelligence teams are on high alert to avert any disturbances.
Charles Were was known for his grassroots development initiatives and vocal advocacy on youth empowerment and education. His death has been met with widespread grief and calls for justice.
As Homa Bay prepares to lay one of its sons to rest, the focus remains on preserving calm and ensuring a solemn farewell that reflects the respect and love the community had for their departed leader.
