Slain Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were will be buried on Friday, May 9, 2025, in Homa Bay County, according to the burial committee led by Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma. The tragic death of the legislator, who was gunned down in Nairobi under mysterious circumstances, has sent shockwaves across the country, prompting an outpouring of grief and calls for justice.
Kaluma announced that Were’s body will be flown to the Kabunde Airstrip (Homa Bay Airport) before being transported by road to his final resting place. Plans are underway to ensure that residents of Homa Bay County have the opportunity to view the body and pay their last respects. “We are still planning the exact route from Kabunde Airstrip so that the people of Homa Bay can have a chance to say goodbye to their MP,” Kaluma said during a press briefing.
The lawmaker was assassinated in a chilling attack on the evening of Wednesday, April 30, around 7:30 pm. He was shot dead while in traffic along Valley Road, Nairobi, after reportedly stopping to make a financial transaction. Preliminary investigations suggest the killers had detailed knowledge of Were’s movements, indicating possible insider involvement.
According to police, the assailant, who wore a hood to conceal his identity, may have trailed Were’s vehicle from the Parliament Building. Surveillance footage shows the gunman being ferried by a motorcycle rider through City Hall Way, Wabera Street, Kenyatta Avenue, Jakaya Kikwete Road, and ultimately to Valley Road, where the fatal shooting occurred.
Authorities have revealed that Were had switched from his usual vehicle to a more discreet salon Toyota Crown, yet the killers appeared to be aware of this change—further raising concerns of a planned, well-coordinated hit.
Detectives are currently analyzing CCTV footage and relying on witness statements, including from the MP’s driver and bodyguard, to track down those responsible for the murder. As the investigation continues, Kenyans await answers and justice for the fallen MP whose career was cut short in a brutal act of violence.
