Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has assured President William Ruto of the Somali community’s support ahead of the 2027 general elections. He described the community as hardworking, economically impactful, and politically influential.
Speaking at a fundraiser in Mandera County for Islamic institutions, Junet urged the President to ignore critics who question his close ties with the Somali community.
“Some people are unhappy with your relationship with the Somali community, Mr President. But the Somali people are hardworking, run businesses, and contribute significantly to Kenya’s GDP,” Junet said.
He added that the Somali community will play a decisive role in the 2027 elections. “From what I’m seeing, in 2027, the Somali community will determine the outcome,” he said.
Junet also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting President Ruto’s broad-based government, promising to help achieve national development goals. “The way things are moving, we shall reach 2027 together, God-willing,” he said.
The MP has previously described the 2027 elections as both a vote and a referendum on Kenya’s political culture. He said it will mark the end of the “politics of exclusivity” and “politics of entitlement,” ensuring equal opportunities for all Kenyans.
The Mandera event brought together leaders, scholars, and community members to support education and empowerment initiatives. President Ruto highlighted the importance of accessible education as a driver of equality and prosperity.
“The more education is made accessible to our children, the more empowered, equal, and prosperous we become,” the President said, praising the Eltabashi Educational Trust for supporting vulnerable children in Northern Kenya.
Junet’s remarks underline the Somali community’s growing influence, signaling that their support could be a critical factor in determining Kenya’s leadership in 2027.
