Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has fulfilled his promise to support families affected by the tragic shootings during the public viewing of Raila Odinga’s body at Kasarani Stadium.
In a video shared on Monday, November 10, 2025, Sonko showcased his efforts in covering funeral expenses for the victims. He personally settled City Mortuary fees at Chiromo for Vincent Otieno Ogutu, paid for caskets, and assisted families with other burial arrangements.
Sonko also distributed Ksh 1,000 to each mourner who visited his residence during the mourning period, extending support beyond logistical assistance. Early in the morning, Ogutu’s family visited Sonko’s residence, where final burial preparations were completed, and all expenses were cleared before they traveled back to their home county of Migori.
The former governor confirmed he had also handled funeral arrangements for Evans Onyango Miche, ensuring both families could focus on honoring their loved ones without financial strain. Families expressed gratitude, taking pictures with Sonko before departing.
“The last two bodies of the five victims, the late Vincent Otieno Ogutu and Evans Onyango Miche, just left Nairobi a few hours ago to their final resting places in Migori and Homa Bay counties, respectively,” Sonko said.
Sonko further pledged to pursue justice for the victims, vowing to hold accountable those responsible for the incident. “After we finish the burial, the chairman will come, and we will plan to take the issue to court. I want these families to go safely. The Ksh 35,000 for Chiromo has been refunded, the caskets have been paid for, and I will continue to support these households,” he added.
The tragedy occurred after a public viewing initially scheduled in Parliament was relocated to Moi International Sports Centre due to large turnout. Chaos ensued when mourners breached a gate, prompting police to respond with tear gas and live bullets. The incident left five people dead as mourners scrambled for safety.
Sonko’s gesture has been widely praised, highlighting his commitment to supporting grieving families and ensuring their loved ones receive a dignified farewell.
