The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has appointed Ms. Sophia Sitati as the Acting Registrar, effective July 14, 2025. Her appointment follows the departure of Ms. Ann Nderitu, who has been named a Commissioner at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In a public statement issued on July 15, ORPP confirmed that Ms. Sitati has been seconded from the Office of the Attorney General, State Department for Justice & Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs. Until her new assignment, she served as Chief State Counsel. The statement highlighted her extensive experience in public service, noting that she brings to the role a wealth of legal expertise and knowledge in governance matters.
“Ms. Sitati brings to ORPP a wealth of expertise and experience as a seasoned legal practitioner, having served in various portfolios in Government,” the statement read.
She officially assumed office on July 15, following a briefing from the outgoing Registrar at ORPP headquarters in Nairobi. During the session, she also met with members of the management team and staff.
Ms. Nderitu exits the ORPP after a notable seven-year tenure that began in 2018. She is credited with building a strong institutional foundation for the Office. Her leadership saw the development of internal policies, stakeholder engagement strategies, human capital growth, and significant reforms in legal and ICT frameworks.
“Her initiatives led to effective execution of the Office’s mandate and advanced democratic governance in Kenya,” the statement added.
Under Ms. Nderitu, ORPP also gained regional and international recognition for its efforts in strengthening political party systems and supporting special interest groups.
Ms. Sitati now takes charge of an institution established in 2008 to oversee the registration, funding, and regulation of political parties. Her appointment marks a significant leadership transition at a critical time for the country’s political landscape.
As Acting Registrar, she is expected to uphold the principles of democracy and continuity while steering the ORPP towards greater efficiency and transparency in Kenya’s multiparty system. Expectations are high that she will maintain the high standards set by her predecessor.
