Police in Sotik, Bomet County, have launched a murder investigation following the recovery of the body of a man who went missing earlier this week. The deceased, identified as Tito Kiprotich Cheruiyot, was reported missing on Monday, November 17, 2025, and his body was later discovered in a dam near the Gethsemane Waterpoint in Chebole Market.
According to a police report dated Sunday, November 23, 2025, Cheruiyot, who worked as an M-Pesa agent in Chebole town, was allegedly murdered and disposed of in the dam.
The grim discovery came after two residents, Felix Kiprono Cheruiyot and Geoffrey Koech, brought a suspect, Gilbert Kipng’eno Langat, to the Mutarakwa Police Post. The individuals alleged that Langat, together with an accomplice still at large, was involved in the disappearance and murder of Cheruiyot. Acting on the information, Sotik police arrested two more suspects and were subsequently led to the dam where the body had been disposed of.
Bomet Disaster Management Officer Stanley Mutai, who oversaw the recovery, confirmed that the body had visible physical injuries. “We have recovered the body of the middle-aged man who was working here in Chebole at an M-Pesa, and he was having some physical injuries on the body,” Mutai said. The body has since been moved to Kapkatet Morgue, awaiting autopsy and funeral arrangements.
Local leaders, including Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok, condemned the killing and called for a swift investigation. “My sincere and heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, and the entire Chebole business community for this loss. We call upon the authorities to fast-track the investigations and may Tito find justice,” Barchok said on his official Facebook page.
The police investigation is ongoing as authorities work to apprehend the remaining suspect and determine the motive behind the killing.
